The People Audit

Leadership Appraisal —— Top leaders who founded, own and manage the company account for much of its total value. Thus to value the target business, its leading factor of success in value creation, namely its leaders, should be evaluated foremost. The leadership appraisal is meant to find out:
  • What are the people currently controlling the company like?
  • How do leaders and managers conduct themselves?
  • What do they stand for and believe in? What are their sources of credibility?
  • What seem to have made them successful so far?
  • What are their ambitions and aspirations?
  • Why are they selling parts or the whole of their business?
  • What risks might there be if they stay on and continue to lead the business, or if they leave?
Talent Assessment —— Whereas the leaders give the business its vision and sense of purpose, the managerial and professional staff determine the company's power in creating customer and shareholder value. Continued value creating hinges on sustained employee engagement, and deal makers therefore need to gain insights into the following:
  • Are the people here for the right reasons?
  • Are the right people doing the right jobs?
  • Are individuals motivated to accomplish the right goals?
  • Are people promoted for the right reasons and given adequate support?
  • Is outstanding performance recognized enough?
  • Is the internal climate generally positive, happy, and empowering?
  • Do they find it easy to realize their personal aspirations and development potential?
  • How does the quality of the people stack up against industry benchmark?
  • Are the people aligned to the same values and beliefs?
  • Is there internal cohesiveness?
